by Yin on October 13, 2009

Deepavali will fall on 17 October 09 this year, a Saturday. Here’s wishing all celebrants a joyous Deepavali.

It will be a session of deliciously wrapped ghee balls- my absolute favourite. If you are visiting Malaysia and want to know where to go to shop for sarees, bangles, decorations and eat authentic Indian food, you can read this article, Little India comes alive with Deepavali celebrations.

Have a wonderful celebration.

Happy Mooncake Festival

by Yin on October 2, 2009

Tomorrow will be the Mooncake Festival- full moon of the eighth lunar month.

The Star paper recently featured the different variety of mooncakes sold by various companies in Malaysia. In the past, some companies can earn more than 50% of their yearly revenue by selling mooncakes alone because there were only a handful of trusted brands in the market. With the introduction of computerized production that reduces manpower, cuts cost and a higher turnaround time, mooncakes are now mass produced. And those age old names, if they have failed to automate the process, they lose out in the competition.

When I was young, mom used to buy mooncakes from an old style coffee shop called Seng Kee- it is located in Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur, next to the pedestrian bridge connecting to Kotaraya. The mooncakes in Seng Kee were all made by hand and as the mooncake festival neared, the workers in the coffee shop would be so busy making mooncakes. As you buy, you can see them doing the dough, putting in the ingredients, etc. The mooncake had no preservatives, so production only began about a month before mooncake festival and sales only started about 2 weeks before the date.

Seng Kee was around for a long time before modernisation have taken over- I was told that once, a dinner was held for my great grandfather there- and my great grandfather had passed away decades before I was born.  The restaurant was probably built close to a hundred years ago.

Today, the coffee shop is no longer there- the anciet 3 storey had been torn down and rebuilt. McDonalds now stands in its place.

Raya Greetings

by Yin on September 19, 2009

I would like to wish all our Muslim celebrants Selamat Hari Raya. Hari Raya is such a joyous occasion where family members get together in their hometowns, savouring in traditional food delights.

Sime Darby advert- This Aidilfitri, may we all get to balik kampung

This year, Raya falls on Sunday, so Monday and Tuesday are both public holidays for Malaysia and Singapore. Klang Valley would probably be deserted but then again, maybe not since the previous years, the shopping complex have been jammed packed with family members. But if your parents are back in hometown, do make it a point to go back and see them- if you cannot take leave during Raya, then perhaps you can get replacement the week after. Your presence would mean a world to them- they may say, ‘oh, it’s okay if you don’t have time to come back’ (assuming you actually can get leave but find it such a hassle to go back). But in their hearts, they really look forward to see you again- if you can make it but make silly excuses, it will really break their frail old hearts. If you have kids, you would want to set a good example, rite…

I decided to post the advert by Sime Darby because I find that the message has some deeper meaning. See the turtles (one of my favourite animals) trying to go back to the sea where they belong and along the side you see rubbish littered around- hinting on pollution and disregard for the environment. We would hope the these little tiny turtles get safely back to the sea, just like we hope everyone reaches their destination safely.

When driving back, please practice caution and consideration for others. Do not drive when you are tired- it has been raining these past weeks so the road would be wet and slippery. Please drive carefully.

Today, while casually browsing through YouTube to add a few songs in my playlist , I found out that The Really Useful Group, is putting up high quality videos of Andrew Llyod Webber’s plays. I’ve always have high regards to works of Andrew Llyod Webber- his plays and songs inspire emotion, and the songs are always sang but singers with very strong and suitable vocals.

Here are some of my favourites and I will start with a little story on Starlight Express-

Starlight Express (my favourite):

Starlight Express is about many different types of trains competing to see who is the fastest. Different human characters played different types of train. If you want to know more about the show, check the explanation video here.

2009 is the Year of the Ox. Like the Ox, may we be resillient in trying times. We do our best- but at the same time, it’s also a good time to take stock and reaccess our priorities.

Today, there is an interesting article in The Star by Grand Master Yap Cheng Hai on Hard Times Ahead. Here are some quotes by Grand Master Yap Cheng Hai which I find inspiring:

When times are hard, you must work hard and not be lazy. God helps those who help themselves.”

“Luck comes from hard work and your own ability, and from being thrifty

Happy Deepavali to all…

Hard to find MTVs of 70s, 80s, 90s and now…

Note: If the video has been removed, then do another search using the name of the singer/song and almost always you will see another one pop-up.

When you go to the doctor and complained about knee or lower back pain, what does your doctor prescribe? Or you have suffered a lower back injury?
Pain killers? Heat treatment? Some new pharmatical products? Perhaps you have also heard about some new herbs by direct selling companies that claimed to relieve the pain?

If you suffer from problems such as lower back, knee and shoulder pain, I would recommend that you consider trying more low impact exercises, such as yoga, pilates and weight training. [click to continue…]
