time management

“He’s late…..AGAIN!”

As you stood there at the appointment meeting place, your friend is nowhere to be seen even after 10 minutes. Angry…and even nasty thoughts raced through your mind in the split of a few minutes:

Why is he always late? Doesn’t he have any respect for my time?

He knows I HATE people who are not punctual. And yet, why he keep doing this to ME?

I am going to give him a piece of my mind when he comes…or maybe, I should just walk off and not answer his calls. Let him have a taste of his own medicine

No wonder he cannot get ahead in life- he can’t even get this simple thing done right- what more so for more important things in life? What a loser!

By the time your friend finally shows up, the thoughts that had raced through your mind build themselves up to a crescendo. Even though your friend apologizes profusely, you are convinced that he does not have respect for you. So the entire outing became very unpleasant, with your angry face turning into ugly shades (we may be shocked at how horrible we look when we are controlled by anger). It was an outing that you have looked forward to but now, no words, expect monosable answers you give when being spoken to. You had hoped that your friend would start being more punctual but the next time, he is late….again.

So how do you react to such situation?

To multitask or do one task at a time?

by Yin on December 2, 2009

We are all expected to be able to multitask. Otherwise, how do one expect to complete so many things at once? Sometimes, we feel that there may not even be enough hours in a day.

But are we more productive if we were to multitask or do one task/job at a time?

In this post, I want to share on why I think focusing on one job at a time is better than multitasking.

In the past, I multitask a great deal, mainly from the training that I’ve gotten from my previous job:

  • talk on the phone and type on the PC at the same time
  • eating and reading- meal time is a good time to catch up on the news
  • when loading something on the net and when the PC connection is slow, I will attempt to complete other task

Also, if I am travelling on public transport or waiting for someone, I will always have reading materials and notebook on hand.

Do you think if you are good at multitasking, you will be more efficient and be able to manage your time better?

Perhaps you can. But how about your stress levels and that constant feeling of being a scatterbrain or overlooking something?

Reclaim your life by decluttering

by Yin on June 8, 2009

There are many websites that offers advice on how to declutter and organise your life. Decluttering is very important- for the sake of your sanity, getting things done in faster time, being able to find stuff and… even a good nights’ sleep.

How are we going to:

  •  effectively manage time…. if we have to grope around stacks of stuff to find our car keys when we need to go somewhere urgent
  • have a good night’s sleep… if chaos (messy cupboard with clothes jutting out of its untidy drawers; memorabias and albums being all over the place) is what our mind registers the first thing in the morning and the last thing before we close our eyes
  • be healthy…..if we have expired can food and rotted vegetables/fruits in the fridge because everything’s all a mess
  • pay our bills on time… when the bills laid buried under stacks of unopened mail, stationery
  • perform at our peak…. when we cannot organise our emails, never organise our tasks and reminders properly or have tonnes of paper all over the place
  • help but not feel overwhelmed and under pressure …. when everywhere we look is clutter, chaos and mess?

Even when running a business, as seen in this bag small in Chiang Mai, customers will be less inclined to buy

Even when running a business, as seen in this bag stall in Chiang Mai, customers will be less inclined to buy

Clutter robs us of quality life and it depletes you of your energy.  How we manage our outer surroundings actually give people an insight of our inner world. People observe us more than we know- and if we can keep our desk tidy and our inbox organised, it gives people the impression that we can manage our lives as well. Now if you are the boss and you have 2 employees- well, have almost similar performance levels. When it comes to promotion, who will you promote- the one who is neat and well organised.. or the clutterer who insists that he/she can find things even though everything’s a mess?

Wake up call from being disorganised

by Yin on May 3, 2008

Here are some honest admission by a hopelessly disorganised person:

From my previous posts written about being organised, I have again regressed into being a total disorganised person.

At work, my desk is full of papers- most of them could be recycled or thrown away (without confidential information) -well, they’re just- rubbish. Then, I am having email management problem … again. I receive lots of emails daily which I need to clear and organised. One thing bout email- what begins as an accumulation of a few days (nearing a hundred) emails quickly become a few thousand within a month. I am so used to receive warning message that I am exceeding the size allocated by Outlook everyday I turn on my PC. Yet, I do nothing about it until Outlook bars incoming emails- then I will spend more than half a day going through mails and deciding which emails to permanently delete.
